1.    Berfungsi untuk Mencegah Serangan Jantung

Apakah Anda membuang biji anggur di saat makan anggur? Mulai sekarang tinggalkan kebiasaan tersebut kerana biji anggur mencegah terjadinya serangan jantung. Demikian diungkap Ahli Kesehatan Gizi Masyarakat Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB) Prof. Dr. Ir. Ali Khomsan. Di dalam biji anggur terdapat pycnogenol. Pycnogenol adalah penguat kolagen yang berfungsi untuk memperbaiki struktur pembuluh darah (anti aging). Menurut Ali, semakin usia kita bertambah maka pembuluh darah akan semakin rapuh. “Kalau sudah demikian maka pembuluh darah akan mudah tersumbat oleh lemak dan kolesterol yang disebut aterosklerosis,” ungkap Ali. Aterosklerosis ini, tambah Ali, merupakan tanda awal dari serangan jantung dan berhentinya fungsi jantung.

Supaya hal ini tidak terjadi, maka yang diperlukan adalah meremajakan pembuluh darah dan membuatnya senantiasa lentur. “Sekali lagi pycnogenol yang adalah zat non gizi yang terdapat pada biji anggur bermanfaat untuk meremajakan pembuluh darah dan membuatnya senantiasa lentur. Menurut Ali, bertambah tua usia manusia, pembuluh darahnya akan semakin rapuh dan rentan terjadi penyumbatan yang menyebabkan stroke maupun penyakit jantung koroner. Pycnogenol berfungsi untuk melenturkan pembuluh darah yang rentan terjadi pembekuan. Hasil penelitian Ali, zat pycnogenol tersebut banyak terdapat pada biji anggur, baik anggur lokal maupun impor dari beberapa negara lain. “Yang terjadi selama ini, masyarakat kalau makan buah anggur justru dibuang bijinya, padahal manfaatnya luar biasa bagi kesehatan,” kata dia.

Grape seed 'may help' in Alzheimer's fight

It might be hard to swallow, but the humble grape seed has been enlisted in the fight against Alzheimer's disease.

Scientists say it could prove to be a safe and inexpensive way of tackling the debilitating illness.

It is well known that grapes and red wine in moderation contain compounds that are good for the brain.

So researchers at Flinders University in Adelaide wanted to find out what impact grape seeds might have on the brain.

They fed grape seed extract to mice with the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease over a six-month period.

"What we found was that the level of damage to DNA, which is a fundamental cause of accelerated ageing and degenerative diseases, was reduced by including grape seed extract in the diet of these mice," Dr Michael Fenech from the CSIRO said.

The grape seed extract prevented the build-up of proteins in the brain that cause Alzheimer's disease and improved brain function.

"The animals behaved better, they have better cognitive function than the control mice," Professor Xin-Fu Zhou, from Flinders University, said.

The results were significant with a 50 per cent reduction in the damage to brain cells in those mice given the extract.

"It's very important and very exciting," lead researcher Dr Yanjiang Wang said.

"The implications of these findings is that phenolic compounds from the grape seed could contribute significantly to diminishing the level of DNA damage in people and therefore reduce their risk," Dr Fenech said.

It is still a while before grape seed extract can be recommended in humans to prevent Alzheimer's disease.

After these promising findings, researchers hope to trial the extract in patients at risk of dementia.

In the mean time, the researchers say there is no harm in eating grape seeds instead of spitting them out.

The findings will be presented to the Society for Neuroscience annual conference in Washington DC.

Grapes contain powerful antioxidants

Grapes could help women to avoid the painful scarring often associated with breast cancer treatment.

Doctors at The Institute of Cancer Research in London believe the antioxidants in grapes may protect against radiation fibrosis.

This condition affects thousands of women around the world each year. It causes tissue around the breast to become hard and stiff. In some cases, it is painful.

 

This scarring can occur years after the women undergo radiotherapy to treat breast cancer.

In recent years, advances in radiotherapy treatment have meant that the likelihood of women developing radiation fibrosis has fallen.

However, it can still occur and doctors cannot offer women guarantees that they will not have any scarring.

Cell damage

While doctors do not know what causes radiation fibrosis, they suspect it may be caused by the continuous release of free radicals triggered by radiotherapy.

Free radicals spread like a kind of biological rust and can cause havoc in cells, even damaging DNA.

Antioxidants can mop up these potentially damaging molecules.

Professor John Yarnold and colleagues at the Institute of Cancer Research are now looking to see if the antioxidant properties in grapes could have a role to play.

"Grape seeds contain a mixture of compounds called flavanoids, also found in other fruits and vegetables," said Professor Yarnold.

"They have antioxidant properties that may be superior to known antioxidants like vitamin E or C.

"There have already been promising small scale trials with antioxidants, but I believe grape seed extract has interesting potential."

Tissue hardening

The doctors are planning to recruit 72 patients initially. Half will be given tablets containing grape seed extract while the others will receive a dummy pill.

This will enable the researchers to determine if the grape seed extract can protect women from fibrosis.

Professor Yarnold said: "Radiotherapy is followed over the years by tissue hardening and tenderness in the breast and underlying muscles in some women.

"We aim to test if grape seed extract reverses these changes and improves patients' quality of life."

He added: "If successful, we aim to conduct further clinical trials in radiotherapy patients cured of other cancers where fibrosis may cause other serious medical problems."

Sir Paul Nurse, chief executive of Cancer Research UK which is funding the study, said: "We hope this trial will eventually lead to a treatment for patients who previously had no respite from the symptoms of radiation fibrosis."
